What text structure does the author use?

Candles and Flashlights

There are major differences between a candle and a flashlight. In contrast to a flashlight, a candle does not require a battery. Another difference is that a candle has an open flame, so it is important to not leave the flame unattended. However, you might be surprised to find out that candles and flashlights have some similarities. For instance, both candles and flashlights provide light. Another similarity is that both are small and easy to carry.

Success and Motivation

Written by: Darby McGregor

People often talk about success and motivation. Have you ever wondered what these words really mean?

Definitions help explain more about these big ideas. Success is reaching a desired outcome. The outcome may be wealth, respect, or other things. Motivation is the condition or process of excitement.

8

Both success and motivation are important for helping a person reach a goal.Similarly, they make people feel happy. Just like success, motivation is very personal. However, this is where the similarities end because success is the end goal of motivation. While success may be defined as reaching a goal, motivation is what makes you excited about reaching that goal.

9

Another difference is that motivation has two parts. There is intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is when you want to succeed for your own reasons.Extrinsic motivation is when you want to succeed to get a reward. Success can be measured by the number of times people have met their goal. Unlike success, which can be counted, motivation is not a quality that can be measured as a win or loss.   In the end, success and motivation count for a lot, but motivation cannot be counted.

Practice Makes Better, Not Perfect

It takes time, effort, and continued practice to do anything well. Learning to play a musical instrument is no different. I should know because at the mere age of 12, I have spent half of my life dedicated to improving my musical talents. Why am I committed to music? The reason is simple; my personal goal is to be a professional musician.

14

Due to the fact that I enjoy music, long hours of practice are not a chore for me. I embrace the opportunity to improve. Each evening, I play a different instrument. My mood determines which style of music and instrument I play. That's the reason for having jazz music on my music stand the evenings that I play the saxophone. I am confident that I will achieve my career goal. After all, it helps when you enjoy what you do.

15

First, I want to keep my options open. This explains why I play a variety of instruments. My musical assortment is wonderful and provides a personal challenge. However , I have accepted that I will not be, and cannot possibly be, a master player of all instruments. In my opinion, a producer looking to hire a musician wants a diversified professional. As a result, I have taken lessons and learned to play competently the piano, the guitar, the saxophone, and the violin. Since the foundation of music is the notes, the language is the same, regardless of the instrument I play.

16

Cause and Effect

This text uses a cause and effect structure to provide examples of how the author is preparing for life as a professional musician. The author explains that he plays many different kinds of instruments. The author explains the reason, or cause, for this when he says, "I want to keep my options open." The author wants to have a career in music, and because he knows that many producers are looking for "a diversified professional," the author has worked hard to learn to play many instruments, including the piano, guitar, saxophone, and violin. One of the effects of wanting to become a professional musician is the need to spend many hours practicing. However, the author explains that the cause, or reason, for all the practice is that he "enjoys music," which means that practice doesn't feel like a chore.
