Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement

An antecedent is the word or phrase a pronoun replaces.

A pronoun must always agree in number with the antecedent it replaces.

  • Rosa (singular antecedent) wants to be a dancer, so she (singular pronoun) is taking lessons.

  • Rosa and Cindy (plural antecedent) have dance lessons. They (plural pronoun) dance for an hour.
