What IS Migration?

  • Migration is the movement of people from one place to another; it is a change of where people live. It can be permanent (more than 1 year), or temporary for seasonal work.

Other important points about Migration

  • The reasons for migration can be economic, social, political or environmental

  • When someone is deciding to move or not, push factors and pull factors help to make the decision.

  • Migration can be voluntary (own choice) or forced (HAVE to move)

  • Migrants who are forced to move are called refugees

  • An asylum seeker is someone who has fled their home country for fee of harm, and is waiting to see if the new country will allow them to stay

  • Migration can be within the same country (Internal migration), or to a different country (International migration
