Ecosystems - Biodiversity & Resilience

Biodiversity - variety of life in the world or in a particular ecosystem.

Biologically diverse communities are more likely to have species that confer resilience to that ecosystem because as a community accumulates species, there is a higher chance of any one of them having traits that enable them to adapt to a changing environment.

Resilience - the ability of ecosystems to resist permanent structural change and maintain ecosystem functions.

Multiple Choice

Question image
Which habitat exhibits the greatest biodiversity?
1
A habitat with 15 different species with about 300 individuals each
2
A habitat with 10 different species with about 75 individuals each
3
A habitat with 4 different species with about 150 individuals each
4
A habitat with only one species with about 2000 individual

Question image

Why is biodiversity so important?

1
Because all species depend on each other to survive, so if one becomes extinct another species that relies on it could go extinct as well
2
Because it’s better to have only one variation of each species.
3
Because it better to only have a few species on Earth.
4
Honestly, I have no idea what biodiversity is!

Which do you think has a higher biodiversity, a food chain or a food web?

1

Food Chain

2

Food Web

20

Multiple Choice

Question image

What has a higher biodiversity: a temperate forest or a frozen tundra?

1

Frozen Tundra

2

Temperate Forest

3

They have a similar biodiversity

21

Multiple Choice

Question image

In general, as you move from the equator to the poles, what happens to biodiversity?

1

Increases

2

Decreases

3

Remains the same

22

Multiple Choice

Question image

Why is biodiversity in an ecosystem so important?

1

Because it can help humans where to determine good places to develop farm land.

2

Because places that have a healthy biodiversity are unaffected by major disturbances.

3

Because having a high biodiversity allows ecosystems to withstand major changes.

4

Because having a high biodiversity allows for fewer opportunities of competition for similar resources.

extinct species
2
the variety of species on Earth
3
nonrenewable resources
4
the rate of species decline

41

Multiple Choice

1. What makes a species invasive?
1
Moving to a new ecosystem and taking resources from natives
2
Not having papers
3
Species that can't adapt
4
Plants that take up too much space

42

Multiple Choice

Question image
If a blue catfish is introduced and eats the large fish who eat the smaller fish, what will happen to the population of the smaller fish?
1
Increase
2
Decrease
3
Stay the same
4
No affect on smaller fish

43

Multiple Choice

Why do the populations of invasive species grow so quickly?
1
Invasive Species are native to an area.
2
Invasive species are prey to many animals.
3
Invasive species have no predators.
4
Invasive species keep the ecosystems in equilibrium.

44

Multiple Choice

1
introducing new species that  can cause problems
