(Brief) History

James Watson, Francis Crink and Maurice Wilkins got a Nobel prize in 1937 for their contributions to finding out the structure of DNA. Rosalind Frank was also part of this but didn't get a prize because she died before she could receive it.

DNA Structure

DNA is made out of building blocks called nucleotides (monomers). There are three parts of this monomer; a base, a phosphate group and a deoxyribose sugar group. DNA is DOUBLE stranded.

6

Base pairs

  • Adenine (A) always goes with Thymine (T)

  • Guanine (G) always goes with Cytosine (C)

  • These pairs are held together with hydrogen bonds

  • Purines: Two ringed; A and G

  • Pyrimidines: One ringed; C and T

  • One purine always goes with one pyrimidine
