Marbury v. Madison
Marbury v. Madison established the Supreme Courts power to decide whether laws are constitutional. this power, called judicial review, is a basic principle of American government.
In Marbury v. Madison, the Supreme Court ruled that Marbury did have a right to receive his commission from President John Adams. However the court ruled that Section 13 of the Judiciary Act extended the court's jurisdiction to cases involving writs of mandamus was unconstitutional.

Strict construction means that the Federal government has very limited powers.
Loose construction means that the Constitution gives the Federal government broad powers to do what is necessary.
