What do you know about COMPOUNDS?

• This is made of 2 or more ELEMENTS that stick together

• H2O or Water is a COMPOUND

What do you know about MIXTURES?

• They are combinations of 2 or more different types of matter.

• Sometimes you can take them apart, sometimes you can't

• Example: Hamburger, trail mix

  
  

What do you know about SOLUTIONS?

• They are a SPECIAL kind of MIXTURE

• They are made when you dissolve things into a LIQUID

• You can't take it apart once you combine it

How do you combine matter?

• Just put things together (trail mix, cheeseburger)

• Combine things chemically-when you combine things chemically, the matter "reacts". Like when you mix oxygen and fuel, you get a reaction called FIRE.

Chemistry Through The Ages

People have been doing chemistry for a LONG time. The Egyptians were the first people to do chemistry. They created glass and a blue dye called indigo.

How does a LightStick work?

• Inside each plastic lightstick there are chemicals and a glass tube

• When you bend the lightstick, you break the glass tube and mix it with the chemicals-that makes it light up

• Lightsticks do not give off heat

Models

Models can be science tools. They show us small versions of things. A toy car is an example of a model of a real car. Also, a globe is a model of the Earth.
