The indicative and imperative

  • These are moods that are used to make statements of fact

  • The imperative is used to give commands

The subjunctive

  • is not often used in English. (That is what makes it so hard for English speakers)

  • It is sometimes used in formal situations, as in subordinate clauses following an expression of necessity.

  • It is important that he read this book. (If the dependent clause were in the indicative mood, read would be reads)

French subjunctive mood

  • Used frequently in French

  • has specific trigger phrases: il faut que, il est important que, il est necessaire que,

  • expresses necessity

  • Formation: Drop -ent from the third person plural form of the present tense

  • add subjunctive endings to the stem: -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent

  • it looks and sounds like the present tense.

Stem changing verbs keep the same stem changes in the nous and vous forms

  • indicative: ils boivent: nous buvons, subjunctive: que je boive, que nous buvions

  • Indicative: ills prennent, vous prenez, subjunctive: qu'il prenne, que vous preniez

  • indicative: ils voient, vous voyez subjunctive: que tu voies, que vous voyiez
