2

Juxtaposition

  • occurs when two things are placed side by side for comparison, often to highlight the contrast between the elements.

Juxtaposition

Examples in Fahrenheit 451: The placement of two different characters, like Mildred and Clarisse. In the opening scene, Montag and Clarisse meet and talk. The very next scene is Montag walking in on his wife's overdosed body on the bed. These two scenes are juxtaposed to highlight the differences in these characters, especially in relationship to society in the book.

5

Juxtaposition

  • Another example: When Montag was in the subway and the Denham's Dentrifice commercial was playing and Montag was trying to memorize a scripture in the Bible. The Bible and the commercial were juxtaposed to highlight the differences between a low key jingle and a thought provoking piece of literature.

  • Can you find your own example?
