Energy of Change
Imagine that you are walking down the street, enjoying a nice ice cream sandwich, when some flashing store lights get your attention. As you step into the store to investigate those flashing lights, you notice that your ice cream sandwich is melting in your hand. Each of these changes, whether it is a change in direction or a change of state, is due to energy.
We will explore some more ways that energy can cause change.
3
Electrical Energy
Electrical energy is used by a cell phone to produce different forms of energy, like sound energy and light energy.
4
Multiple Choice
Is electricity causing the blades of a fan to spin?
Electricity IS causing motion or change
Electricity is NOT causing motion or change
5
Multiple Choice
Match a change to the energy that changed it:
motion of a fan blade
light energy
sound energy
electrical energy
heat energy
6
Heat Energy
Heat energy is used to change the temperature of food and cook it.
7
Multiple Choice
Match a change to the energy that changed it:
cooking on a stove
light energy
heat energy
sound energy
electrical energy
8
Cooking creates a change in the temperature of the food. Electrical energy is transferred into heat energy that heats the pan with the food in it.
9
10
Heat Energy
Heat energy makes the sand very warm - maybe even too hot to stand on!
11
Multiple Choice
What type of energy causes the chocolate bar to melt?
light energy
electrical energy
sound energy
heat energy
12
Multiple Choice
Water evaporating when it is heated
Energy IS causing motion or change
Energy is NOT causing motion or change
13
Light Energy
Light energy is used by plants to create food so they can grow.
14
Multiple Choice
What type of energy produces light energy which allows drivers to see the road better?
light energy
heat energy
electrical energy
sound energy
15
Sound Energy
Sound energy allows us to hear what people are saying.
16
Multiple Choice
Match a change to the energy that changed it:
vibration
light energy
heat energy
sound energy
electrical energy
17
Sound Energy
Sound energy is used when checking your pulse. The vibration of your heart creates sound, and a doctor listens for the patterns to measure your pulse.
18
Energy of Motion
Energy can cause a change in motion of an object. It can change the position or direction of an object.
19
