Adaptation

feature that helps a living thing survive. The poison that some frogs release from their skin is adaptation that helps them scare off predators.

Carnivore

animal that eats only other animals. Jaguars and ocelots are the main rain forest carnivores.

Herbivore

living thing that eats only plants. gorillas are rain forest herbivores.

Omnivore

animal that eats both plants and animals. Humans are omnivores.

Producer

organism that can make its own food, using energy from the Sun. Plants are producers.

Primary Consumer

animal that consumes producers (plants)

Secondary Consumer

predator, or animal that feeds on a primary consumer.

Scavenger

animal that feeds on dead matter

Decomposer

living thing that breaks down dead plant and animal matter. Bacteria are the main rain forest decomposers.

Habitat

place where organisms of the same kind live. Living things are adapted to their habitat.

Predator

animal that eats another animal

Prey

animal that is eaten by another animal; also, when an animal pursues another animal to eat it.
