Objective of the lesson
Speech can be noth positive and negative. If we are not careful, misuse of the tongue can cause serious trouble. The purpose of this lesson is to identify different kinds of sons committed by the toungue, in the form of negative speech. This lesson also discusses ways to remedy such sins.

The Tongue
The tongue is a very useful organ in the human body. Without the tongue we cannot do two very important things-- Eat or Talk. Our vocal cord may produce sounds but our tongue shapes the sound into words that makes sense.
Allah gave us a tongue-- an important organ in the body that can positively shape our lives or it can cause destruction. We should be in control of this organ. If we don't know how to control our tongues then we might end up with many problems in our daily life and in the hereafter.

Gossip
Backbiting
Slander, Insults, Defamation
Ridicule, name-calling
Lies, fabrications, falsifications
Hypocrisy, Treachery
Intentionally misquoting, Rumors

Qur'an and Sunnah on Verbal Sins
We will find that Islam talks alot about verbal sins
The Qur'an prohibits and forbids these verbal sins VERY seriously.
The Qur'an is very strict and precise with calling out all types of verbal sins
The Prophet Muhammad stressed the importance of cpntrolling our tongues

The Prophet Muhammad stressed avoiding using inappropriate or negative use of the tongue, or use abusive language, because it can jeopardize our position of being a good Muslim.

Tongues reveal true feelings
Whatever is in your heart will eventually revealed by your tongue
Your words will somehow reflect what you maintain in your heart
Your words reflect your most inner thoughts.
Therefore its important to maintain a good heart, If your heart is good then you will most likely not say bad things or commit verbal sins.

Gossip and Backbiting
Gossip is Idle talk about someone or something ("Did you hear about this?....")
Backbiting is saying something negative about someone behind their back even if it is true.
Backbiting is like eating the flesh of your dead brother.
Gossip is known as GHIBAH, a negative statement about someone that they would not have liked to be said.

Slander, Insults, Defamation
Slander:Talking negative about a person or spreading rumors about a person in order to damage their reputation or status.
Abdullah ibn Ubayy once spread a slander about Aishah (R)
Whoever slanders the innocent then whatever damage they do will come back onto them.
Allah strongly dislikes the slander of innocent people especially inocent women. Their punishment is in thi life AND in the next life.
Never use you tongue to insult and defame someone back.

Ridicule and Name-calling
The Qur'an prohibits riduculing and making fun of people
We are no better than the next person
If no one knows about our shortcomings it is because Allah covered them up from the people.

Hypocrisy, Treachery
Hypocrisy is saying one thing in one place but doing the opposite in another place.
Hypocrites dont have any moral values
Hypocrites publiclly state one opinion while holding a dofferent opinion in private.
They promote Evil and forbid good deeds, and ignore the commands of Allah

Keep your promises
We should always be careful aout what we promise and make sure we can keep those promises. We should always try our best to keep pur promises because Allah will question us about them on Yawmul Qiyaamah.
" O you who believe! Why do you say that which you do not do? Most hateful it is with Allâh that you say that which you do not do." Surah Saf: 2-3

Spreading Rumors
A Rumor is a statement that we hear from person they we don't verify if its true or not.
We should always verify information because it is a command from Allah
Rumors hurt people in many different ways.

Remedy for Verbal sins
Be thankful there is a remedy for all types of sins
Seek Help with Allah to remove our ability to commit sins.
Make the effort to change ourselves and then Allah will help us
If we see a group of people engaged in Idle talk we should turn away from them and spend time with people who are more positive.
