Today we are going to look into Writing
For Paper 2, in the first part you will be asked to write a (short) message, email and postcard as a reply.
In almost all the question types that have been asked out there, you will most probably be asked to :
a) invite/suggest/recommend
b) give 1 or more reasons encourage someone
c) to take action
It does not run away from this. Therefore, all you need to do is to link all of them together and try to make your writing sound as natural and interesting as you can.
4
To write better, here is the cycle or steps that you can follow:
1) Greetings
2) Intention
3) Reason 1
4) Reason 2
5) Reason 3 (Optional)
6) Encouragement
7) Pen off
5
1) Greetings
You start your email/message/postcard by greeting the person who wrote to you.
Example:
Hi Tina, how are you? I hope you're in the best of health. I have read your email/message/postcard.
6
2) Intention
After you greet the person, tell him/her your intention. Why did you send him/her the email/message/postcard.
This is to make sure you are on the right direction. It also helps you to make sure you answer the question.
Example:
I am writing this email/message/postcard because I want to give you some advices.
7
3) Reasons
It is very important that you give AT LEAST 2 reasons to show that you understand what the question asks.
EVERY QUESTION should be READ and DISSECTED!
REASON 3 is optional but highly recommended if you feel that you don’t have much to say.
Use connecting words to help arrange your points. (Next, Furthermore, Not just that, Other than that)
Example:
One of the advices I can give to you is you should start revision early. Don't wait until the very last minute. Other than that, you should always refer to your teachers if you have any problems related to the subject. This will help you to keep the revision pace and prevent you from getting panic as you're getting closer to the final exam.
8
4) Encouragement
After you have stated all your reasons (points) give some encouragement to the person you are writing to. The encouragement should tally with the problems that person is facing.
Example:
studying problem: I know you can do this! / I know you can sort out you studying problems real soon.
suggestions: I am sure my suggestions would fit you really well! /I hope you would love the activity/camp/hobby/present I suggested!
9
5) Pen Off
Just a sentence to end the whole writing.
Example:
I need to go now, see you soon.
