​3.1 AREA MODEL

Area= the number of square units that cover a surface

​

Each rectangle has a length and width. You can find the total area of each by multiplying. A = L x W

​

Then, add up the area of each rectangle to find the total area.​

WHY do I need to know how to use the area model?

• It helps build fluency with multiplication skills

• It builds number sense

• You will use it for algebra

• It makes multiplying larger numbers easier

• It helps you understand models for multiplying decimals by decimals
