Facts About Folk Tales

Folk Tales are stories that hve been passed down by work of mouth from genetation to generation. They fearure supernatural events and/or characters with supernatural abilities. Folktales reflect the values of the culture from which they originate.

Dialect

Because Folk Tales are passed down through the generations orally through story telling, they often don't use what we think of as "standard" English. They are written as they would have been spoken.


Dialect - Is a form of language spoken in a particular place or by a particular culture. Using dialect helps the reader hear how the narrator or characters sound.

Elements of a Folk Tale

  • Supernatural events set in the distant past

  • Talking animals or other characters with supernatural abilities

  • Lessons about what was important to the culture of origin
