What do exponents do to a base?

What are exponents?

• They are a type of arithmetic

• They tell us what to do with numbers

What do exponents do?

• They tell us to take a number and multiply it by itself a certain number of times.

• Repeated multiplication

Why do exponents look like they do

• The first number gets multiplied repeatedly a certain number of times

• The first number is called the BASE, written full size

• Second number written smaller and at the top right of the base

• Tells us how many copies to make of the base

• Called the exponent

•  $7^6$  Seven to the sixth power

•  $13^{14}$  Thirteen to the fourteenth power

• Anytime the exponent is a 2, called squared
