Past Perfect

When we tell a story, we often use the past perfect to talk about one event that happened before another event in the past.

We form the past perfect with had + past participle of the verb. In the negative form we use hadn't.

Example

"When Ana arrived at the movies, her friends had already bought the tickets."

Let's remember some verbs in the Past Participle?

Time Linkers

Time linkers are words responsible for linking two phrases. These terms are related to the "time" factor.

Examples of time linkers are:

1. when --------> quando...

2. as soon as --> assim que...

3. then ---------> depois/então...

4. until ---------> até...

5. while --------> enquanto...

EXAMPLE

1. When: "I was cleaning the house when my mother called me"

2. As soon as: "As soons as I saw Maria, I knew she was happy"

EXAMPLE

Linking Expressions

Use linking expressions to connect two or more ideas in a sentence. 

Each linking expression is used for an specific purpose. 

WHILE

Use while to show that two things happen at the same time.

Example: "My mother is working while my father is cooking."

HOWEVER

Use however to show that two things are contrasting or different.

Example: "I don't like cake. However, I like sandwich."

ALTHOUGH

Use although to show that two things are contrasting or different.

Example: "Although I like living in São Paulo, I prefer Rio Branco."

BECAUSE

Use because to give the reason of something.

Example: "I traveled to Ceará because I needed to see my grandmother."

SUCH AS

Use such as to give examples.

Example: "My sister usually plays sports, such as soccer and volleyball."

AS WELL AS

Use as well as to add new information in the sentence.

Example: "It's important to exercise as well as eat healthy food."

SINCE

Use since to say how long something has happened.

Example: "I study at Colégio Meta since 2017."
