Figurative Language
What is figurative language? When words mean something other than their literal meaning.
Simile: a comparison of two things using the words “like” or “as”
Metaphor: a comparison of two things without using “like” or “as”
Personification: when you use a non-living object and make it have human or animal-like qualities
Hyperbole: exaggerated statements that are not meant to be taken literally
Onomatopoeia: words that are associated with a sound (sizzle, buzz, wham, pow)

Examples
My body felt like a tree. (simile)
My body felt as big as a tree. (simile)
My body is a tree, tall and strong. (metaphor- still a comparison but the words “like” or “as” are not used)
The wind howled loudly that night. (Can wind actually howl? What does howl?)
•Ms. Grande heard that last piece of pie calling her name. (Does the pie have a mouth?)
