PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE OF

FARM TOOLS

processes and procedures to prolong the usefulness of farm tools and equipments

15

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE

  • WASHING/CLEANING

  • SHARPENING

  • LUBRICATING

  • REPLACEMENT OF DAMAGED/BROKEN PARTS

16

WASHING

Washing is the easiest form of preventive maintenance

17

1. Use garden hose to remove accumulated mud on your tools

in some cases, soil started to harden cannot be removed by garden hose alone

Slide image

You can also use steel brush to remove hardened soil/mud

21

2. Wash with detergent for positive result

mud and sturdy soil can be effectively remove using detergent/soap.

26

SHARPENING

SHARPENING is actually removing material from a knife blade's edge. This is usually accomplished by grinding the edge of a bolo against a sharpening stone or apparatus. SHARPENING makes your blade sharper.

Slide image

27

SHARPENING

  • Prepare the tool to be sharpened

  • Get a good grip on the tool. You can use clamp to fix the tool and wont move while you are sharpening it.

  •  You can use file, coarse abrasive stone or handheld grinder.

  • Try to maintain a 45 deg bevel angle (factory default)

  • Keep filing until the edge is sharp and even across the entire blade of the spade

28

BEVEL ANGLE

File the spade edge at about a 45 degree angle for best results. You're aiming for an angle that's sharp enough to cut easily through soil, sod, and roots but not sharp enough to cut you.

Most of the equipment requires oil, especially those parts with bearings. Lubricating is the process of applying oil to moving parts of an equipment to reduce friction and avoid rust.

31

LUBRICATING YOUR PRUNING SHEARS

(Step-by-Step Procedure)
