Syllable Division Rules Review
Learning Objective: The student will be able to understand syllable division rules for two syllable words with three or four closed consonants between the syllables.

Warm Up: Student Notebook. Start on page 73
Add new high frequency wordsRemember to circle each one! Read each word and each sentence out loud.

Rule 1 Review: When only ONE consonant is between TWO vowels, keep the consonant with the first syllable to keep it closed in and the first vowel short.
Examples: hab it, con test, rap id, top ic

Rule 2 Review: When TWO consonants are between TWO vowels, divide between the TWO consonants.
Examples: muf fin, pub lic, cob web, in sist

Rule 3 Review: Keep the digraph 'ck' together.
Examples: pock et, jack et, lock et

Rule 4 *NEW* If there are THREE consonants and TWO form a DIGRAPH (wh, ch, sh, th, ck), the digraph stays together.
Examples: eth nic

Rule 5 *NEW*: Keep all blends together in the SECOND syllable.
Examples: hun dred, chil dren, con, flict, ex press

Rule 6 *NEW*: If a word is a compound word, divide between the two words.
Examples: sand box, wild cat, gold fish

Rule 7 *NEW*: If there are FOUR consonants together watch out for digraphs, blends, and welded sounds--divide between them.
Examples: sand blast, hand stand, hand bag
