Dividing Integers

Use the same rules as Multiplying Integers

Dividing Integers with DIFFERENT signs
--> the answer will be negative!
 $\left(+\right)\div\left(-\right)\ =\ -$  
 $positive\div negative=negative$  

Dividing Integers with the SAME sign
--> the answer will be positive
 $\left(+\right)\div\left(+\right)=+$  
 $\left(-\right)\div\left(-\right)=+$  

Division can look like...

this -->  $-10\div2=-5$  

or
this -->  $\frac{-10}{2}=-5$  

***they both mean "-10 divided by 2" (negative 10 divided by positive 2)
                      - the numbers have DIFFERENT signs 
                      - so the answer is negative!

Fact Families with Integers

Multiplication and Division

- We will use what we learned about multiplying integers to now divide integers

- if you know a multiplication fact of integers, then you also know 2 division facts

Example: We know that
 $\ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ -3\times-5=15$  

 

Then we also know...
 $15\ \div-3=-5$  
and
 $15\div-5=-3$
