Solving One Step Equations

• It only takes one step!

• Isolate the variable which means get the variable by itself.

One Step Equations with Addition and Subtraction

When the coefficient of x is 1 (1x = x)

x + 6 = 15

x - 6 = 15

Isolate the x

• We must undo whatever has been done to the x

• If you have added to the x, undo it and subtract the value from both sides of the equation

• If you have subtracted from the x, undo it and add the value to both sides of the equation

Example

• x + 6 = 15, 6 has been added to x so to undo it, subtract 6 from both sides to find x

• x - 6 = 15, 6 has been taken from x so to undo it, add 6 to both sides to find x

Isolate the x
