Background Info on The Suez Canal

The Suez Canal, located in Egypt, is a 101 mile (163 km) long canal that connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Gulf of Suez. Immediately after it opened in November 1869, the Suez Canal significantly influenced world trade since goods could be transported globally in a short amount of time. Egypt was forced to sell its portion of ownership to the United Kingdom in 1875. There was a convention in 1888, where it was decided that ships from all nations could use the canal.
