  • Within a Contraction

  • To show Possession

  • She can't go in there.

  • "Can't" is short for "can not"

To Show Possession

  • Use an apostrophe + S ('s) to show that one person/thing owns or is a member of something.

  • Mai's shoes were caked in mud.

  • NEVER use an apostrophe to show a plural.

Plural Possession

  • Occasionally something is owned by more than one person.

  • Use an apostrophe after the "s" at the end of a plural noun to show possession.

  • The girls' basketball game.

  • My Parents' car

  • If a plural noun doesn't end in "s," add an apostrophe + "s" to create the possessive form.

  • The children's rooms
