Essay
An essay is a piece of writing that is written to convince someone of something or to simply inform the reader about a particular topic.

Five paragraph Essay
A classic format for compositions is the five-paragraph essay. It is not the only format for writing an essay, of course, but it is a useful model for you to keep in mind, especially as you begin to develop your composition skills.
1. Introductory Paragraph
2. Body — 1st paragraph
3. Body — 2nd paragraph
4. Body — 3rd paragraph
5. Concluding paragraph

Signposts
Signposts are words or phrases that help articulate the structure of a piece of writing and ensure that readers don’t get lost.
Single words and short phrases can be useful signposts, such as additionally, consequently, however, also, in contrast. However should be used to pivot to an opposing idea or to acknowledge another side of an argument, and consequently indicates that an idea is a result or consequence of a previously discussed idea or point. Signposts that identify the sequence or direction, for example, first, next, then, finally; or first, second, third, and so on.
