Hydrocarbons

• Are compounds that contain only carbon and hydrogen atoms.

  
  

STRUCTURAL FORMULA

• Condensed structural formula, each carbon with its attached hydrogen atoms is written as a group.

• Expanded structural formula, shows how the hydrogen atoms are arranged around a carbon atom.

• Skeletal formula or line-angle formula, indicates the carbon skeleton in which the carbon atoms are represented as the ends and corners of the zigzag line.

Alkanes: saturated hydrocarbons (single bonds)

• Straight-Chain Alkanes are named according to the number of carbon atoms they contain.

• Branched Chain consist of the longest continuous chain of a branched hydrocarbon is known as the parent alkane. All the other elements or groups that replace an H atom in the parent alkane are regarded as substituents. An alkane substituent is called an alkyl group
