How can we compare fractions?

Lets look at what happens when a denominator gets larger

The model shows two fractions 1/5 and 1/10. Normally 10 is larger than 5 but what do you notice about the pieces when the denominator gets bigger

As your denominator gets larger, the pieces get smaller.

Ask yourself this, would you rather share a pizza equally with 4 people or 8 people?

If your numerators are the same, the smaller denominator is going to be bigger

The denominator 2 gives you a bigger piece than the denominator 4.

Comparing fractions with equal denominators is easy because that means the parts are the same size. If the denominators are the same size, you count which one has the most parts or the largest numerator. The one with the most parts is the biggest.
