Why do we need to know Significant Figures?

  • In math and science we often talk about significant figures, or significant digits. Significant figures are the digits of a number which actually are relevant in indicating how precise a number is.

RULES

  • All non zero digits are significant

  • All zeros between non zeros are significant

  • Trailing zeros are only significant if there is a decimal point

  • Leading zeros are never significant
