Amendment

any change to the Constitution

ex: Article V established a two-step process for amendments.

Double Jeopardy

putting someone on trial again for a crime which he/she was proved not guilty

ex. A person's life would be put in danger through double jeopardy.

Due Process

following established legal proceedings

ex. No one can have life, liberty or property taken away by government without due process.

Enumerated Powers

powers granted directly to the National government

ex: The enumerated powers are listed in the Constitution.

legal counsel

a person who studies or practices law

ex: People havve the right to have the assistance of legal counsel.

Petition

a formal request for government action

ex: Government cannot deny people the right to petition the government.

search warrant

a court order allowing law-enforcement to search a suspect's home or business for evidence

ex: If a policemen wants to make a search, they first make apply for a warrant.

Self-incrimination

giving evidence that could lead to one being found guilty

ex: Refusing to answer questions may be self-incrimination.
