Nouns

  • Name people, places, things or ideas

Types of Nouns

  • concrete nouns: appeal to the five senses (Ex. school)

  • abstract nouns: feelings, ideas, qualities (Ex. honesty)

  • common nouns: general people, places, things, and ideas (Ex. school)

  • proper nouns: specific people, places, things, and ideas (Ex. Robert)

  • collective: singular nouns that refer to a group of people or items (Ex. class)

Pronouns

  • takes the place of a common or proper noun

  • Ex. he, she they, we, us, me , my, them, his, hers, theirs

Verbs

  • An action verb describes what someone or something is doing

  • Ex. My pig escaped this evening and ran down the road.

Linking Verbs

  • A linking verb describes a condition; it links the subject to a description

  • Ex. I feel tired.

  • If the subject is not doing an action, and if you can substitute am, is, are, was, were for the verb and the sentence makes sense, then you probably have a linking verb.

  • The soup tastes delicious. = The soup is delicious.

  • The soup is not tasting something, and I can change the verb to is while keeping the meaning the same, so tastes is a linking verb.

Adjectives

  • They describe nouns and pronouns.

  • Ex. The red car is parked in the third row of the parking lot.

Adverbs

  • They describe verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.

  • Successful students study smartly and work diligently to get a good job.

Prepositions

  • a word or group of words used before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to show direction, time, place, location, spatial relationships, or to introduce an object. 

  • Prepositional phrases begin with a preposition and end with a noun.

  • Ex. When you go in the library, please put your book on the shelf.
