Musical Terms

In a musical, characters sing at moments of high emotion.

A musical usually has 12-15 songs and are placed in the story when a character needs to express something.

The Opening Number is the first song in the show. It usually tells the audience three things:

Where the story is set.

Who the chracters are

What the basic tone of the show is

(funny, serious, sad, etc)

Big, Bright, Beautiful World

The "I want" song talks about what a character is wishing for, hoping for, desires, or wants.

It usually happens within the first 15 min of the musical.

The Eleven O'Clock Number often shows a moment when the lead character has a change of heart or is convinced to make a big decision.

It is usually a big powerful song sung near the end of the show.

The Closing Number is the last song in the show that brings the plot to a conclusion.

It usually has all of the characters in it either celebrating a happy ending, or mourning a sad ending.
