When we report what we have heard or read, we often use the reported speech.
Reported speech is, basically, shift the tense and change words, such as pronouns and time expressions, to express the message from the point of view of yourself.

Let's check some examples:
Direct speech
A: I don't understand this email.
B: Why is that?
A: My friend didn't tell me about this party.
B: Oh. Maybe that was a secret and you weren't supposed to know.
A: You may be right. Oh no! I have already replied to her.
Reported speech
I was talking to Sarah and she told me that she didn't understand that email.
She said her friend hadn't told her about that party.
I told her that maybe that had been a secret that she hadn't been supposed to know.
But she told me she had already replied to her friend.
