St. Lawrence Seaway

The United States and Canada worked together to build the St. Lawrence Seaway. They made canals and a system of locks that can raise and lower ships from water at two different levels. As a result, oceangoing ships can reach as deep into the interior as western Lake Superior.

Mackenzie River

The Mackenzie River and its tributaries dominate much of the lowlands of the far north. This river flows north and empties into the Arctic Ocean. How does the location of this river affect its use?

Oceans and Temperatures

The Pacific Ocean brings rain and mild temperatures to western Canada. Cold air blows over the Arctic Ocean to chill northern and central Canada. The Atlantic Ocean moderates the temperatures of eastern Canada.

15

Economic Importance of Oceans

The Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are also important economically. Ships cross the oceans to bring goods to and from Canada. They are important for another reason, too. These bodies of water are important fisheries. A fishery is an area where fish come to feed in huge numbers.
