Direct Quotation

• exact words person or character says

• Identify speech tags vs. direct quotations

• Only put quotation marks around the words actually being said

• Blue = speech tag / Red = direct quotation

Using Quotation Marks

• A period is always placed inside the closing quotation marks.

• Place a question mark or exclamation point inside the closing quotation marks when it is a part of the quotation.

• Place a question mark or exclamation point outside the closing quotation marks when it is a part of the entire sentence.
