Massachusetts Bay Colony

  • The Puritans disagreed with the church of England

  • Didn't want to leave. They wanted to live solely by the Church. Pure and free

  • Decided to start a colony in North America

  • Like the pilgrims they were coming here for religious purposes

  • The entire community would be based on their religious beliefs

12

John Winthrop

  • He was a Lawyer

  • He was the governor of the new colony

  • He said, "We shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us"

  • This meant they would be setting an example for what a colony should be like

  • If they lived by the book ( the bible) then they will be successful.

  • So, no monkey business or shenanigans

  • Super serious

14

The colony grows

  • Better prepared than the Pilgrims

  • many skilled people (hunters, fishermen, farmers, carpenters, bakers, etc.)

  • Left England in March. This gives them plenty of time to farm/grow crops

  • 1630-Arrived in Salem just north of Plymouth. They later move south to Present day Boston

  • Massachusetts Bay Colony- Named after the Massachusetts Indians.

  • So successful that many more puritans move from England

15

16

10 years later (1640)

  • 20,000 puritans live in the northeastern part of the United States.
