4
Respiratory System
Group of tissues and organs that allows you to breathe.
The organs that help to get oxygen from air to your blood and get rid of carbon dioxide, makeup the respiratory system.
5
Larynx/ Voice box
Routes air and food into proper channels
Plays a role in speech
6
Trachea
Wind pipe
Extends from Larynx to the middle of thoracic cavity where it divides into bronchi
7
Bronchus
plural: bronchi
Formed by division of trachea.
Subdivide into smaller and smaller branches, bronchioles
8
Alveoli
Alveolus – individual sac
Bunches of tiny air sacs inside the lungs.
When you breath in, they fill with air.
Very thin walls which permit the exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide)
Exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood stream.
9
10
Lungs
Soft spongy elastic organs with smooth shiny surface.
Consists of bronchioles, alveoli and an extensive network of blood vessels and the capillaries.
Occupy most of thoracic cavity.
11
Diaphragm
Sheet of skeletal muscles
Dome shaped muscular partition
Works with lungs to inhale and exhale air.
