Simple Sentences

• Are composed of one independent clause (complete thought)

• Have a subject and a predicate

• Subject: Who or what the sentence is about

• Predicate: what the subject is/is doing

Examples of Simple Sentences

• The cat ate his food.

• I walked to the park.

• The new student arrived at school early.

• The notebook fell on the floor.

• Are joined by a coordinating conjunction

Complex Sentences

• Are composed of one independent clause (complete thought) and one dependent clause (incomplete thought) joined by a subordinating conjunction

• AWUBIS: after, although, as, as if, as long as, which, while, when, where, whether, if, if only, in order that, because, before, unless, until, since, so that.

• Martin and Nick will go to the water park unless there is a thunderstorm.

• Since we want to go on vacation this summer, my family made a budget to save up money.

• You can wrap the cakes and pies and deliver them after we bake them.
