How does this metaphor work?
It is an insult to those who are rich and privileged by accident of birth.
They do have to make it to home plate, but they did NOT NEED TO MAKE AN EFFORT to get to 3rd base.
If you just start the game at third base, you did not get there yourself. Your family and its money and power got you there.
Someone who is born rich and buys their way to famous universities is essentially born on third base.
The sad part is those born on third often resent the idea that they didn't make their own success.
