Question image

I am a master at understanding the formation of sedimentary rocks!

No, I need help!

Kinda, I still need to study.

Yes! I know exactly how sedimentary rocks are formed!

3

Sedimentary rocks are formed by...

  • 1. Weathering- The rocks are weathered, or broken down. Las rocas se desgastan, o se quebran.

  • 2. Deposition- The rocks start moving and build on top of one another. Sometimes dead animals and plants also build on top of the rocks.

  • 3. Compaction- The rocks build up with pressure. Las rocas se compactan y presionan.

  • 4. Cementation- The rocks "glue" together.

5

Sediments have layers! Los sedimentos tienen capas.

FOSSIL FUELS / COMBUSTIBLES FOSILES

10

Slide image

11

Fossil Fuels are found inside sedimentary rocks.

  • There are 3 types of fossil fuels: COAL, OIL (PETROLEUM), AND NATURAL GAS.

  • They are the remains of dead plants and animals. Son formados por plantas y animales muertos.

12

Coal / Carbon

  • Coal is made up of only dead plants. Carbon se forma de plantas muertas.

  • Coal is found mostly in swampy areas because of all of the plants and vegetation.

Oil and Natural Gas / Petroleo y Gas natural

  • They are formed from dead animals AND plants. Se forman de plantas y animales muertos.

Landforms / Relieves de la Tierra

How are they formed? Ice, water, or wind?

Como se forman? Hielo, agua, o viento?

19

Canyon

They are formed by FAST-MOVING WATER -like a RIVER. This takes millions of years.

20

Delta

  • It is caused when sediments DEPOSIT near a slow-moving river and the mouth of an ocean or sea.

21

V-shaped valley

  • It is formed by fast-moving water weathering, or breaking down, the rock.

22

U-shaped Valley

  • It is formed by a GLACIER, or ice, weathering the rock and forms a WIDE VALLEY.

  • FORMED BY A GLACIER

23

SAND DUNE / DUNA DE ARENA

  • It is formed by WIND that deposits sediments and sand.
