What is a baseword?

What is a suffix?

A baseword is a word that can stand alone and has meaning

Example: risk

A suffix is a part of a word that is added to the end of a word and can change its meaning

Ex. -ing

-er Vowel Suffix

means "a person who does something"

  • hunter: one who hunts (hunt is the baseword)

  • planter: one who plants (plant is the baseword)

  • singer: one who sings (sing is the baseword)

-er Suffix: also is used when comparing TWO things, people or actions.

  • If we compare Maria to Jeff, who is taller?

  • One is tall, the other is taller

  • We have compared 2 people

  • tall is the baseword

-est Vowel Suffix: is used when comparing THREE or more things, people or actions.

  • If we compare Jason, Maria, and Jeff, who is the tallest?

  • One is tall, the other is taller, and the third is the tallest.

  • We have compared 3 people
