2

First Condtional (things that are possible)

  • If clause (the condition) is in the present simple

  • Main clause is will + infinitive

3

First Conditional

  • Positive

If you stop spending, you’ll save more money.

I’ll buy you an ice cream if you come shopping with me.

  •  Negative

If we don’t hurry, we’ll miss the bus.

Joe won’t finish his homework on time if we don’t help him.

  •  Questions

Where will you stay if you don’t find a hotel?

If it rains, what will we do?

4

In the main clause, we can use other structures:

  • be going to

If I get good grades, my parents are going to buy me a present.

  • can/may/might/should

If you’re too late for your train, you can both stay here.

We may go to the beach if the weather is fine.

You might regret it if you don’t make it up with him.

If you don’t feel well, you should go home.

  • imperative

If you want to do well in the exam, study harder.

Don’t eat the food if you don’t like it.

5

We can use the first conditional to express different functions, such as a threat, an offer, a warning and a promise.

  •  If you do that again, I’ll be very angry. (threat)

  • We’ll take you to the station if you need a lift. (offer)

  • If you ride your bike like that, you’ll have an accident. (warning)

  • I’ll lend you my mp3 player if you take good care of it. (promise)

6

4 If should not be confused with when.

  • If John phones, I’ll check with him. (if = a condition)

  •  When John phones, I’ll check with him. (when = a point in time)

We normally use a present tense after conjunctions of time although the time reference is future. Time conjunctions include:

  • after

Come round after you finish school.

  • as soon as

You must visit us as soon as you’re feeling better.

  •  before

Before I leave, I’ll phone Tom.

  • until

I won’t celebrate until I hear my results.

  •  when

Are you going to change your name when you get married?

22

We can use the Present Perfect after a conjunction of time if it is important to show that the action in the time clause is finished.

  • I’ll feel like a good holiday after I’ve finished these exams.

  • Phone me as soon as you’ve heard from Tim.

  • I’m not going to settle down before I’ve seen more of the world.

  • I won’t tell anyone Cora’s news until I’ve spoken to her.

  •  When we’ve saved enough money, we’ll go travelling.
