If the attribution comes first ..it is followed by a (comma),

Eric said,

John yelled,

Mela cried,

Whatever the character says is all within quotation marks..always starts with a capital letter...and includes the end punctuation

Eric said, "I am hungry!"

notice actual quote starts with a capital letter....the punctuation is with the quote....ends with "quotation mark" and punctuation is within the quotations.
