Steven goes to the woods often. He hides behind a tree. He watches the opossums play.

The opossums are as big as cats. They're gray They have white faces with black eyes and ears. They have long, pointed noses. They live in trees. Steven calls them possums for short.

3

Steven watches them climb. Climbing is easy for possums. Their feet have five toes. One toe is like a thumb. They use their feet like hands. Their tails help too. Their tails are long and thin. Possums can hold things in their tails and climb with their tails.

Some animals eat possums. But they won't bother a dead possum. So, when an enemy comes along, possums play dead. They lie down. They shut their eyes. They don't move. They look dead. Then the enemy goes away.
