You can find synonyms in a story to help determine the meaning of an unknown word.

• The girls were delighted to sleep outdoors. "I'm so happy that we get to sleep in the tent."

• You can determine that delighted means happy by pointing out the two synonyms from this story.

Some examples are:

different/unique

scared/frightened

Sick/ill

joyous/glad

intelligent/smart

ruined/damaged

"Wow! That's more stars than I ever dreamed of.

I never imagined that there could be so many."

What two words are synonyms here?

• "Debbie believes deeply in her work and insists that people learn about how solar power can help them."

• "They are happy to do what she demands."

• insists and demands mean the same thing. They are called synonyms!
