What is the monomyth genre?
4
A monomyth is:
The monomyth genre is the archetypal hero’s journey.
Its structure is circular; the hero leaves an ordinary world, ventures into the unknown, and returns to the ordinary world.
This genre features many archetypes such as the hero, the shadow, the mentor, and the ally.
The hero experiences transformation because of the struggles he endures and the tests he passes. This transformation allows him to return home and help others in some way.

Assessment 18A: Focusing Question Task 2
Part 1: Demonstrate and organize your understanding of the characters and events of The Odyssey by completing the Character Archetype and Stages of a Hero’s Journey tables.
Part 2: For an audience who has read and studied the text as you have, write an explanatory essay in which you synthesize your understanding of The Odyssey by explaining how this text illustrates the genre expectations of the monomyth as well as how it might diverge from those expectations. As you explain how this myth illustrates the hero’s journey, be sure to include how the hero responds or changes as the journey moves toward resolution. Please incorporate the three vocabulary words of your choice into your essay response.
Support your response using evidence from the following text: The Odyssey, Gillian Gross and Neil Packer
Additionally, the following structure might also help you organize your essay: One body paragraph about how the stages of the hero’s journey are represented in this text. One body paragraph about how the character archetypes are represented as well as how and why the hero is transformed as a result of his journey.
