Poll

Poll Question (no points) -- How do you like our journey through the Virginia Provinces so far?

Great!

Pretty good.

Lots of fun.

The book was better than the movie.

the Appalachian Plateau.

2

the Western Front.

3

the Place Beyond the Pines.

where Bob lives.

18

The Appalachian Plateau

  • Only a small part in Virginia

  • Mainly sedimentary rocks

19

Poll

Ready to apply your knowledge of weathering, erosion, and plate tectonics to the physiographic provinces of Virginia?

Yeah boy!

You know it!

I'm ready.

What are you waitin' for, Christmas?!!

20

Multiple Choice

This region is very flat and is mostly made of sediments produced by erosion of the Appalachian Mountains and the Piedmont.

5

Appalachian Plateau

21

Multiple Choice

Virginia's smallest region has rugged, irregular topography and is underlain by ancient, flat-lying sedimentary rocks; Virginia's coal deposits are mostly found here.

Valley and Ridge

5

Appalachian Plateau

22

Multiple Choice

Virginia's largest region is an area of rolling hills underlain by mostly ancient igneous and metamorphic rocks.

3

Blue Ridge

4

Valley and Ridge

5

Appalachian Plateau

23

Multiple Choice

This region is a high ridge separating the Piedmont from the Valley and Ridge Province. It's billion-year old igneous and metamorphic rocks are the oldest in the state.

Appalachian Plateau

24

Multiple Choice

This is an area with long parallel ridges and valleys underlain by ancient folded and faulted sedimentary rocks; you will find karst topography here.

Blue Ridge

4

Valley and Ridge

5

Appalachian Plateau

25

Multiple Choice

Think about this: three provinces, the Coastal Plain, Valley and Ridge and Appalachian Plateau, are primarily made of sedimentary rock. This suggests that all three...

1

were once underwater.

2

are prime real estate.

3

have the best beaches.

4

live in a pineapple under the sea.

26

Multiple Choice

Question image

The folding and faulting of the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountain Range are believed to be the result of ___________________ 480 million years ago; it happened during the formation of Pangaea.

1

converging tectonic plates

2

diverging tectonic plates

3

tectonic plates sliding past each other at a transform boundary.

4

paper plates

27

Multiple Choice

Converging tectonic plates also led to the Piedmont being made largely of this type of rock.

sedimentary

2

metamorphic

28

Multiple Choice

Some areas west of the Coastal Plain include igneous rocks, indicating Virginia was once...

1

volcanically active

2

covered in glaciers

3

entirely underwater

29

Mole Hill

Mole Hill is a 48-million year old extinct cinder cone volcano just west of Harrisonburg. It's one of two extinct volcanoes in Virginia.

Poll

No Points -- Other parts of Western Virginia include large areas of flood basalt dating back 500 million years, to the break up of the supercontinent...

Pangaea

Rodinia

Wal-Mart

31

Breakup of Rodinia

Around 570 million years ago the underlying tectonic plates began to move apart. Vast quantities of lava rose through a developing system of rifts, erupting onto the surface along rift zones that stretched along what is now eastern North America. Eventually the rift between the plates grew so wide that water began to fill it, and a new ocean was born.
