2
Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids
The periodic table can be divided based on whether the elements are metals, nonmetals, or metalloids.
Metals are shiny, conduct heat and electricity, are malleable, and ductile.
Non-metals are dull, do not conduct heat or electricity, and are brittle.
Metalloids have various properties of metals and non-metals. They are "in between" metals and nonmetals.

Understanding the Elements
The Periodic Table of Elements tells us the atomic number, element symbol, element name, and the atomic weight/mass of an element.
The atomic number matches the number of protons and electrons in an atom.

Neutrons
Located inside the nucleus
Protons and Neutrons together make up the atomic mass.
To find the number of protons, subtract the atomic number from the mass. What you have left is how many neutrons you have.

Bohr Model
A model of an atom showing the number of electrons present.
Ring 1, closest to the nucleus, can hold 2 electrons.
Ring 2 can hold 8 electrons
Ring 3 can hold up to 18 electrons
Ring 4 can hold 32 electrons

Which of these is the correct Bohr model for Hydrogen (1)?
17
Multiple Choice
Which of these is the correct Bohr model for Flourine (9)?

Which of these is the correct Bohr model for Copper (29)?
20
Valence Electrons
The outermost shell of an atom is the valance shell.
The electrons on the valence shell are called valence electrons.
The fullness of the valance shell determines how reactive (happy or mad) an atom is.
21
Lewis Dot Model
One way we can display the reactivity of an atom is to use the Lewis Dot Model.
Has the chemical symbol surrounded by dots to represent the valence electrons.
