5

What is a like denominator?

A like denominator is a denominator that is the same. This means that the whole has been divided up into the same number of parts.

Another way to solve this problem is to determine the whole fraction that equals 1 whole in this model. Remember that in order for a fraction to equal a whole the numerator and denominator are the same.

Tre has already run  38\frac{3}{8}  of the race. What fraction of the race does he have left?

The whole race =1 or  88\frac{8}{8}  , so to solve just subtract the numerators.

  88\frac{8}{8}  -  38\frac{3}{8}  = 58\frac{5}{8}
