Selling Your Lawn- Questions 7-14

Selling Your Lawn
1. In some places, people get paid to rip up their lawns. This happens in some dry states, such as Arizona.
2. Growing green lawns in the desert is a wasteful practice. Golf courses are even worse than lawns. Both use a lot of water. They make tons of waste. They use harmful fertilizers. Keeping the grass healthy takes a lot of work.
3. Instead, some states now pay people to remove their lawns. They pay up to $3.75 per square foot. The amount of money a person can earn is unlimited.

4 Here’s how it works. A landowner applies to the state. The owner must have at least 250 square feet of lawn. The owner sends a copy of the water bill. He or she also sends pictures of the site. If approved, then the owner has 60 or 120 days to remove the lawn. An inspector visits the site to see if the work is done. Then a check comes in the mail. The land must stay as is for at least five years.
5 So what can be used to replace the lawn? Anything used must let air pass through. This means it cannot be concrete. It cannot be a building or a pool. Most people use native plants that need little water or care. These include flowers, grasses and ferns, and even trees. Because they are native, these plants attract birds. They also blend in with the land.

These kinds of plants need 80 percent less water than lawns. They need a lot less care, too. Most people combine these plants with stone and mulch to make the land look nice.
6 This is called “dry landscaping.” It combines native plants and proper care. It needs little or no water. The goal is beautiful land that saves both energy and water. This works well in dry places
