1
What is matter lab
Matter is all around us- we will make observations about three types of matter - solids, liquids, and gases
2
state of matter- Solids:
A solid is characterized by structural rigidity and resistance to a force applied to the surface. Unlike a liquid, a solid object does not flow to take on the shape of its container, nor does it expand to fill the entire available volume like a gas.
3
Pick a something that is solid in the room that you are
4
Multiple Select
Check all that apply about your solid object
Can a solid object pass through it easily?
Does it take up space?
Does it feel wet?
Can you pour it?
Does it flow?
5
Multiple Select
Check all that apply for your solid
Could it sit by itself?
Does it have a shape of its own?
Can you see it?
Could you feel it?
Does it have mass?
6
State of matter: liquid
Liquids have definite volume, but indefinite shape. They are free to form droplets and puddles when they are not inside a container. When a liquid is inside a container, it will take its shape. Unlike gases, a liquid will not change its volume to spread out and completely fill a container.
7
Pick something that is liquid the room that you are in
8
Multiple Select
Think of something that is LIQUID-
Could it sit by itself?
Does it have a shape of its own?
Can you see it?
Could you feel it?
Does it have mass?
9
Multiple Select
Check all that apply for your liquid object:
Can you pour it?
Does it feel wet?
Does it take up space?
Can a solid object pass through it easily?
Does it flow?
10
State of matter: gas
they expand to fill their containers, and they occupy far more space than the liquids or solids from which they form.
11
Pick something that is a gas in the room that you are in
12
Multiple Select
Think of a gas (the inside of a soccer ball is filled with a mixture of gases)
Does it have a shape of its own?
Can you see it?
Could you feel it?
Does it have mass?
Could it sit by itself?
13
Multiple Select
check all that apply for your gas
Can you pour it?
Does it feel wet?
Does it take up space?
Can a solid object pass through it easily?
Does it flow?
14
Multiple Select
What TWO questions from all three tables have “yes” for solids, liquids, and gases?
Does it take up space
can you feel it?
Does it have mass
does it pour?
can you see it?
